Early morning hustle, Sunday lessons

This was one of those “up before the sun” kind of Sundays. Not exactly how I dream of spending a weekend, but hey—this is the business I signed up for. The funny part? Today started with a mistake I’d made weeks ago while on vacation in Greece, and somehow it still turned out alright.

The Tent Panic That Wasn’t

So here’s the deal: I accidentally double booked our 30x45 pole tent for today’s client. Total panic mode—I even got a backup quote for a new tent just in case. But during a walk-through, the client and I realized they couldn’t even stake at the venue. Crisis averted.

And it turns out, Friday’s client couldn’t take a pole tent either. Double crisis averted. We ended up installing a weighted 20x60 tent instead, which not only fit the site but also bumped up their bill. Win-win.

Early Call, Big Setup

My guy and I were on-site at 6:30 a.m. sharp, locked and loaded, ready to start building. Three hours later, we had that tent standing tall and ready for their 10 a.m. start. Since I had help, I seized the moment to grab one of the solo table-and-chair pickups from Thursday. Flexibility is everything in this business.

The Reality of Margins

Here’s where the numbers matter. For the big tent job, I paid my guy extra for early morning and Sunday work but still cleared nearly a 90% margin. Even if I’d stayed home and paid two people instead, margins would’ve landed around 85%. That’s the kind of math I like.

On the other hand, the table-and-chair gig was another story. Margins barely cleared 66%, and if I hired it out, they’d sink below 50%. Simple jobs don’t always make financial sense—but the client was thrilled, tipped us, and even said they’d referred us to friends. A good review could make that one worth its weight.

Breaking It All Down

It was Falcons game day in Atlanta, which meant traffic was a nightmare. My guy showed up a little late for teardown of the 20x60, but we still broke everything down in two hours. Back at the warehouse, we unloaded and even prepped gear for tomorrow.

It was a long Sunday, more labor than I’d prefer on a weekend—but perspective matters. Someone else would be happy for the hours and extra pay, and at the end of the day, I’m building something bigger than just one Sunday’s sweat.
