Sometimes you’ve got to borrow the big guns
Today was a one-job kind of day—but it was a big one. For the first time ever, we set up a 30x45 keder frame tent. Small detail: I don’t actually own one of those. The original plan (and signed contract) was for a 30x45 pole tent, which I do own. But then the client built this amazing deck presentation—turns out, she’s an event producer—that showed the tent spanning the driveway. Yeah… pole tent wasn’t going to cut it.
So, I scheduled a site visit and confirmed what I already knew: we’d need a frame tent. Luckily, I’ve got a friendly competitor who owns a Top Tec Future Lite frame and was eager for more practice with it. Win-win. I coordinated, got the client’s approval, and lined up the labor.
The Big Build
We brought half the labor (four guys total), while my competitor supplied the rest. The plan was: all hands on deck for the tent, then we’d handle everything underneath. And honestly, it went smoother than I expected. I could’ve managed the timing better, but in about five hours we had the frame up, lights strung, stage and dance floor set, plus tables and chairs ready to roll.
I’m especially excited to see how the numbers shake out on this one. I’m typically not a big fan of sub-renting this much—it always takes more coordination than I’d prefer. But, regardless of how the numbers look on this, I think it was a win all around!
The Post-Job Grind
After wrapping up, I headed back to the warehouse, ready to clock out. But the inbox had other plans. A flood of emails—quotes, payments, people literally trying to give us money—kept me glued to the screen longer than I wanted. Tired or not, can’t ignore the money side of the business.
One of those emails stood out. A client officially agreed to a rain plan tent. This is actually the first time we’ve booked one. The deal: a 50% non-refundable deposit upfront, with the decision and balance due three days before the event. If you’re in the tent game, I’d love to hear what your rain-plan policy looks like. I bent our policy and was pretty eager to take this one, honestly, because I needed the tents anyway. I’ve got another job a few months out that requires them, and I’d been dragging my feet on buying. Now, with this client’s booking and a shiny new credit card offering 12 months of 0% APR (link below), it finally makes sense to pull the trigger.
Until next time
