Balancing tight margins with solid wins

I only had two jobs today, but they managed to fill the entire day. Between heavy takedowns and gearing up for the weekend, it felt like a full sprint from start to finish. Some wins, some frustrations, but plenty of lessons in the mix.

Keder Frame Lessons (Again)
The morning started with taking down the 30x30 keder frame tent we set up alongside our friendly competitor last week. For the second time in a row, we ran into the same problem: pulling those stubborn stakes from the ground.

Even with a 4-person crew, we were on-site for nearly two hours, which isn’t great for efficiency. The job only cleared about a 30% margin, but I’m chalking it up as a learning exercise. My opinion hasn’t shifted much—these “hybrid” keder frames with smaller tubes don’t excite me, and going full beam still feels like overkill for a 30-wide tent. The strategy decision remains on pause.

40-Guest Package Wins
From there, we headed to the next stop: a straightforward 40-guest package takedown. The highlight here was the client’s wonderful feedback—I just need to lock in a review now.

With heavy overcast skies, we hustled to beat the rain and managed to get everything wrapped up on time. Margins were strong at about 75%, with the biggest expense being travel since it was just over that 20-mile sweet spot.

Prepping for the Weekend Push
The rest of the day shifted back into prep mode. I spent time pulling inventory and getting things organized for the upcoming weekend’s lineup. Mixed in a few calls and emails too—just enough to make sure the admin side didn’t fall behind.

Like I said, only two jobs today, but it was definitely a full one.

Until next time
