Surprisingly profitable, even with the subrent headache
I thought today was going to be one of those grind-it-out, nothing-to-report kind of days. Instead, I ended up being pleasantly surprised by how profitable things turned out—though I also got a reminder that subrenting kid-sized tables is way more trouble than it’s worth.
Job #1 – Flooring Comes Through
First stop of the day was pulling up the subfloor we dropped off on Friday. Easy in, easy out. Honestly, we were barely there 30 minutes, but the kicker? That quick turnaround had the healthiest margin of the day—around 77%. Flooring might be bulky and a pain when paired with tents, but on its own? It’s a sneaky little profit machine. I should be pushing it more.
Job #2 – The Kid’s Party Headache
Next up was the kid’s party teardown. Smooth job, no issues on-site, but the numbers told a different story. Margins slid below 60%—and that’s me being generous.
The culprit? I had to subrent two kid’s tables because nobody seems to have them in stock right now. Not only did that eat into profits, but I also had to drive an hour each way to pick them up. The rental cost is in the books, but that mileage and wear on my vehicle isn’t even factored in. Let’s just say kid’s tables aren’t exactly earning their keep.
Job #3 – Gender Reveal, Steady but Distant
Last job was a repeat client’s gender reveal. Straightforward and hiccup-free, just like their last event. Margins landed around 65%—not as strong as I’d like, but not terrible either. The only drag was the distance: more than 25 miles away. Once you factor in travel, the numbers take a hit. Still, it’s worth it to keep a solid client happy.
Admin Marathon
After those three back-to-back jobs, you’d think I’d call it a day. Nope. I got sucked into admin work and couldn’t pry myself away until late at night. Between planning and prepping for a couple of upcoming events, my desk basically held me hostage.
Until next time
