The day I did everything except chase more business

I thought today was going to be one of those “easy breezy” workdays… until I found myself driving an hour just to pick up two tables. Not twenty. Not a truckload. Just two little 5-foot kids’ tables. Sometimes this business really tests my patience and my sense of humor at the same time.

The Two-Table Mission

I had plenty of time to order these from my suppliers, but everyone had them listed as “backordered.” A couple even claimed they were available, only for me to get hit with refund emails later. That’s how I ended up on the road, sub-renting from another company.

Silver lining? I connected with the owner when I picked them up. She’s been in the game about as long as me and has already built something pretty nice. Always cool to meet peers who understand the grind.

Warehouse Vibes

After my glamorous road trip for tiny tables, I almost went straight home. But something pulled me toward the warehouse.

I ended up doing a little bit of everything: prepping for this weekend, cleaning, organizing, tinkering… basically busywork that made me feel productive. Truth is, I need to stop falling into that trap and refocus on what actually moves the needle: getting more business.

Easier said than done, though. Sometimes you just want to sweep a corner and convince yourself you’ve got it all together.

Small Wins, Big Lessons

Even though today was “light duty,” it reminded me of a couple things:

  • Sub-rentals are humbling — you’re never too established to still need help.

  • Busywork feels safe, but it won’t grow the business.

  • Connections with other owners can be more valuable than the tables themselves.

Not a wasted day, but definitely one of those where I had to laugh at myself a little.

Until next time
