Easy Day on Paper, Expensive in Reality
Today was technically more relaxed — but still a full day of work. One of those days that looks smooth in theory until you add up the numbers and realize how quickly “profit” can turn into “ouch.”
Tables, Linens, and Math Lessons
First stop: a last-minute event at a partner venue that referred me to the client. We dropped off 14 tables in the morning, spent maybe 15 minutes on-site, and I came back solo around 5 p.m. to pick everything up.
On paper, the job cleared 80% margin — a $700 invoice with $150 in labor and driving costs, for $550 profit. But… I was six tables short, so I had to buy them last minute ($480), plus linens ($170). That “$550 profit” turned into a $100 net loss.
Sure, now I’ve got extra inventory that’ll pay off later, but it’s still money out today — and it stings.
Warehouse Talk & Temptations
After the pickup, I dropped my teammate back at the warehouse to stage tomorrow’s orders while I checked out a nearby warehouse space. The spot was clean, bigger, and actually cheaper than what I’m paying now. Tempting.
I had a good talk with my current landlord, and we’re solid for now, but this new place is one I’m keeping an eye on. It’s too good not to consider.
Chair Stack Hustle
Then it was back on the road — a quick drop-off of 50 chairs for one of our long-term clients. They just needed a few more items for the week, and I was happy to help.
Bonus: another rush fee. Gotta love repeat customers who move fast and pay accordingly.
Airport Drop-Off & a Missed Opportunity
Last stop: a construction site near the airport. Another last-minute order, another rush fee, and thankfully, no setup required — just a quick drop-and-go.
Looking back, I probably should’ve let my teammate stay behind at the warehouse to get more staging done for tomorrow’s event. Both of these drop-offs were simple enough to handle solo, and that extra prep time would’ve gone a long way.
Until next time
