When the schedule laughs back at you
I thought I had today mapped out perfectly. I’d rearranged things so I could pick up the kids and still keep work moving smoothly. It was going to be beautiful. But, as usual, the day had other plans.
School Strike Mission
We started the morning at the local school, tearing down what we had set up yesterday: 600 chairs and 50 round tables. The school needed their spaces flipped back for students, and it being Friday, the turnaround was non-negotiable.
Given the tight restrictions, we did pretty well. Megatron (our electric dolly) came through big, but I couldn’t help thinking how much smoother it all would’ve been with a lift gate. We clocked about 3 hours on site, making it a total of 9 hours spent between yesterday and today, if you’re keeping count (I know I am). Tomorrow, we go back to finish striking the tents.
Curveball from the Wedding
Just as we were wrapping up the first stop—95% through, to be exact—I started getting calls and texts I couldn’t ignore. The wedding that was supposed to be tomorrow? Yeah, they suddenly needed everything today by 4pm for rehearsal.
This was the same wedding I had carefully rescheduled when rearranging my week. I’d worked it out with the month-of planner and thought everything was locked in. Turns out, there was a miscommunication. After a few frantic conversations and some mental gymnastics, a new plan came together. But it meant we were far from done.
Backyard Wedding Setup
Stop number two was a 20x30 tent with tables and chairs for a backyard wedding. This was supposed to be the end of our day. But with the new plans, we had to kick into high gear.
Thankfully, one of my guys convinced me to load the tent parts for this job onto the truck earlier. I didn’t want the headache of playing Tetris with the loadout and had planned to return to the warehouse first. I’m so glad I listened. Our 3-man crew crushed it—tent up, tables and chairs set—in just a little over an hour. I was impressed.
Race to the Rehearsal
From there, it was nonstop. I was updating the bride’s mom constantly, sending her estimates and keeping her in the loop. But first, a quick breather at Chick-fil-A—eating on the road, of course—before we headed back to the warehouse.
We unloaded and loaded up again: 20 tables, 240 chairs, a few cocktail tables. GPS said an hour away, and it didn’t lie. We rolled up just after 5pm, set the chairs for rehearsal, and cleared out so they could rehearse. Then we headed to a different part of the property to set up the reception dinner tables and chairs—our first time arranging round tables in a serpentine-like pattern. Two hours later, we were done and staring down the hour-long drive back to the warehouse.
What a day!
Oh, and the kids? Yeah… I left them stranded at school. Took them two hours to walk home, but they got there right around the same time I did. Gotta teach them survival at some point, right?! 🤣
Until next time
