Rain Delays, Low Margins, and a Damaged Table — What a Combo

After pushing yesterday’s pickups because of the rain, today was all about catching up. The weather finally let up, but between soggy conditions, travel time, and thin margins, it felt like I was fighting uphill the whole day. Not the worst day — but definitely not one for the highlight reel.

Stop #1 – The Home Event Hustle

First pickup was simple: tables and chairs from a private event at someone’s house. No stress, no drama… and no profit. The job wrapped cleanly, but the margin was an unexciting 60%. Sometimes it feels like I’m just moving furniture for fun at that rate.

Stop #2 – The Miles That Ate My Margin

Next up was another table and chair pickup — this one with higher revenue and even a rush fee added. I thought that would help, but nope. Margins came in right around the same 60% mark. The culprit? Miles. Nearly double the distance of the first stop. Thankfully, it was in the same direction, so at least the routing made sense. Still, not exactly a financial win.

Stop #3 – The Corporate Closeout

The final stop of the day was a corporate pickup — more tables and chairs (surprise!). This one was close to the warehouse and also had a rush fee, so the margins finally crept up to around 80%. A small win… until I noticed one table was damaged. The client said it arrived that way, and I don’t have a reason to doubt them. Chalk it up to the game.

Grinding In Between

Between all the driving and pickups, I managed to tune into a Goodshuffle seminar — always on the hunt for nuggets of wisdom to tighten up operations. Plus, I kept the inbox moving: sending quotes, answering emails, and trying to keep momentum despite the messy logistics.

Days like this remind me that profit isn’t always about the numbers — sometimes it’s about taking the lessons that help the next run go smoother.
