All gas, no brakes
Today was one of those days where everything was in motion from the moment I started. Five pickups, back to back, with barely enough time to breathe between stops — but honestly, it felt good. There’s something about being in full action mode that reminds me why I built this business in the first place.
Local Company Chair Job
The first stop of the day was a clean win — 150 chairs at a nearby company, already stacked neatly in three stacks of 50 and waiting at the dock. Dockside pickup meant zero drama: roll up, load up, and roll out. Fifteen minutes flat and we were done.
The Easy 40
Stop two was a 40-guest package in a customer’s driveway. No one home, no issues, just a smooth in-and-out. Those are the kind of jobs that make the day feel lighter.
The Big One
Stop three was the heavyweight. If you remember Friday’s setup — the 20x60 tent with a dance floor, tables, and chairs — this was the pickup. The original customer wasn’t there this time (probably for the best), but her husband handled it with ease. It took us about two and a half hours to break it all down, but everything went smoothly. It was the longest and most involved job of the day, but also the most satisfying to wrap up cleanly.
Card Tables & Tetris
Stop four brought us to a religious center hosting a mahjong tournament. We picked up 32 card tables, and thankfully, they’d staged them in a spot we could easily reach with the electric dolly — a big win compared to drop-off day. The truck was pretty packed at this point, so we had to play a little Tetris to make it all fit. Still, no complaints.
Last & Maybe Least
The last stop was a quick one — four cocktail tables and a trash can from a birthday party. Easy load, five to ten minutes tops, and the day was officially wrapped.
Margin Check & Lessons
Here’s where the business brain kicks in. The local company chair job came in as the highest margin — over 90% — thanks to proximity and simplicity. The big tent job, even with its complexity, landed around 80% and held strong as the top revenue earner.
The weakest performer was the card table pickup, which came in at 55% (or 34% if I had hired it out). It’s not a high-labor item by any means — just a simple load and unload — but the margins don’t justify the effort or the wear on equipment. So I raised prices immediately, from $12 to $13 per table. It’s a low-margin product, and given that the plastic tables are already starting to show wear, protecting the profit on them was long overdue.
The cocktail table job also landed on the low side at 63% actual margin (38% hire-adjusted), but that was expected given the small ticket. Overall, weighted margins held around 80%, right in line with goals — but the analysis definitely showed me where to tighten up.
Until next time
