When the universe balances the books
I thought today would be light work — just two jobs on the weekend — but the universe had other plans. Nothing went exactly how I expected, yet somehow it still turned into a solid day.
Tent Talk
The morning started with a full load-up for what was supposed to be ten 10x20 pop-up tents. This job had been on the books for months, and honestly, it pushed me to grow. When I first booked it, I only had one 10x20 in inventory. I bought a second one, started marketing our “duo tent package” harder, and even managed to flip a few extra tents along the way. It was all in preparation for this single event.
So, when we rolled up and the client told me they only needed four tents, I had to laugh. It was a beautiful, cool day — I get it. But man, I had just invested in new inventory and scheduled a three-man crew to make sure we crushed it. One of my guys joked, “That’s the universe paying us back for yesterday’s dance floor mess.” He wasn’t wrong.
Even though we hauled extra gear for no reason, the invoice was paid, no refunds were given or expected, and the setup was smooth. Margins ended up around 90%, which is well above target. I’ll take that win any day.
Film Set Pickup
The second job of the day was a quick pickup from a film production that had rented tables and chairs long-term. Fifteen minutes on-site and we were done — easy peasy.
But the numbers told a different story. Margins came in under our usual 80% benchmark, which was a surprise. Between two separate orders (both with rush fees) and a long-term rental rate, I expected a higher profit margin. Turns out, the multiple trips into the city for delivery and pickup ate into the gains. Still profitable — just not as strong as I’d like. Hopefully, they’ll call again, even though I never actually met the customer (facepalm).
A Midday Pause
Originally, I planned to keep the crew at the warehouse to help with organization between drop-off and pickup, but since the schedule shifted, we ended up taking a 4-hour break. I headed home, played with the kids, and of course — made a few tweaks to the website. It was one of those rare days where things went sideways but still felt right in the end.
Until next time
