Skipped Homecoming, Learned a Lesson Anyway
Today hit a little different. It’s the Sunday after homecoming, and I can’t shake the feeling that I fumbled in the life department just a bit. I haven’t been back to homecoming since I moved to Atlanta, but this year marked my 20th fraternity anniversary — a milestone I really wanted to celebrate. Isn’t this the whole reason we chase entrepreneurship? To build the freedom to choose what’s important?
The Job I Couldn’t Say No To
I had one job this weekend — literally. I even structured my schedule that way so I could try to have my cake and eat it too. Ironically, this client booked while I was sitting in the airport on my way to Jamaica for the frat anniversary. I was happy and mad at the same time! I knew the date was a conflict, so I tried to price myself out, but not so much that I couldn’t tell myself I didn’t try because the numbers came in too close to my monthly goal to ignore. This one booking alone was nearly 20% of October’s target.
The Tenting Challenge
The initial wedding request called for more tenting than we even had in stock. That would’ve meant investing in new inventory and going into the red on cash flow. Thankfully, we landed on a 15x60 setup, which only required one additional tent top. Manageable, but still tight.
To make things more interesting, the venue was a public park — usually a hard no for me. Permits, staking rules, logistics — it’s a lot. But somehow, everything came together cleanly. Even the staking was approved and smooth, which almost never happens.
The What-Ifs
Here’s where I beat myself up a little. I built this event up so big in my head that I couldn’t even consider scheduling something around it. I just knew I was going to be on-site all day! And what if something went wrong on wedding day and I’m not around?
But looking back? It was totally doable.
For set up, I had the A-team with me, and we knocked those tents out in two hours flat. If I’d rented a bigger truck and made it a one-trip job, I could’ve flown out that same evening. An added cost for sure, but less time in the field.
Breakdown would’ve meant an early flight back today, sure — but with the site tucked away and secure, I didn’t even need to be there at dawn. Lesson learned.
Next Steps: Replace Myself
The good news? Margins were solid — easily clearing and exceeding the 80% hurdle. And if I’d let the crew handle it solo, it would still sit around 78%. That’s the real win buried in all this: it’s probably time to start preparing to replace myself in the field. The business can handle it — I just have to let it.
Until next time
