The work trip that turned into way too much fun
I’m having way too much fun at MATRA — like, dangerously fun. I came here planning to grind, learn, and maybe spend my evenings decompressing in silence. Instead, I’ve somehow turned this into a non-stop networking marathon with some of the best people in the industry.
Networking Gone Wild
During the day, I’ve been on a mission to connect and learn — that part’s going great. But I totally underestimated how much energy it takes to actually talk to people all day. My goal was to focus and get work done in the quiet moments. The reality? I haven’t had a quiet moment since I arrived.
Everywhere I turn, there’s another great conversation waiting to happen. Some are lighthearted, some are deep business talks, and some are just “we’ve all been there” bonding moments. It’s wild how much genuine connection you can find when you stop trying to make it happen.
I even met Adam the Tent Guy. After watching countless hours of his youtube content, I thought that was pretty cool!
Random Nuggets and New Boots
I tried scrolling through my camera roll to recap what I actually learned today, and the most concrete thing I could recall was discovering stake bags. Didn’t even know those existed before this trip.
Oh, and I scored a free pair of work boots — along with a crash course in taking better care of my feet. Not exactly the “business intel” I expected, but I’ll take it.
Somewhere in the middle of it all, I also made loose plans to head out to Colorado this spring for some hands-on training. That’d check another state off my list and keep the learning rolling.
On the Business Front
Back home, the leads have been trickling in — but not the kind that get me excited. You know the type: “I need a few tables and chairs tomorrow, but I’m not willing to pay the premium.” My inner response? “Then you don’t really want to sit down!” 😂 (All jokes, of course.)
I also had a great conversation with one of the big companies in my market. They recently stopped displaying prices on their website, so naturally, I had to poke a little fun and ask, “Hey, what’s going on here? Can we fix this?” It turned into a surprisingly insightful discussion. I love when big companies act like big companies — intentional, strategic, and unbothered.
Until next time
