A solo day, a small breakthrough, and a couple solid wins
Today was one of those solo mission days where you brace yourself for the worst and somehow end up surprising yourself. I woke up still feeling the tail end of being sick, the truck was full from yesterday, and I already knew the concrete blocks were going to test my soul. But somewhere between dread and determination, I found a little spark — and it carried me through the day.
The Concrete Block Breakthrough
I started the morning staring at a truck full of gear I didn’t unload yesterday. My guy had to leave early, my parents were in town, and honestly, I just didn’t have it in me last night. I knew it would come back to haunt me — especially those concrete weights.
Normally we tilt and roll them as a two-person job. Doing it solo? I was already mentally preparing for pain. But then a random idea hit me: what if I used a ratchet strap to help tilt back the stacked 700 lbs of block? First attempt? No go. The front hook was facing the dolly.
Then I tried the top hook.
And it actually started to tilt. Not fully, but enough to tell me I was onto something. I tightened my grip, wrapped the strap around a handle, leaned into it — and boom. It worked.
Proud doesn’t even cover it. That moment saved me so much time and kept me from having to separate and restack individual blocks like a caveman. Honestly should’ve clocked out right there and called it a win.
But of course… there were still two stops left.
The Thanksgiving Delivery That Made the Cut
First stop was a simple Thanksgiving table-and-chair drop. One of the only ones I ended up taking this year. I dodged the tiny, last-minute eight-chair orders because I just wasn’t in the mood to be running around all week for micro-deliveries.
This one made sense though: At least 30 chairs and a couple of tables (big money, I know!) and close enough to the warehouse to make the margin potentially worth it. We’ll see how the numbers shake out, but at least the logistics were clean.
Corporate Luncheon Pickup (and a Shortcut Home)
Second stop was the corporate luncheon we dropped off yesterday. When I got there, they already had everything broken down and ready for me — which was great — especially since they paid for set up and break down. However this means I’ll need to unstack all the chairs to cover everything later. No free lunches!
But I beat the rain, the job was quick, and the best part? It was literally 10 minutes from home. Rather than dragging myself back to the warehouse, I headed straight to the crib. Margin came in around 75%, not amazing but respectable. I also didn’t factor in the site visit I did beforehand, which was a little silly for a small indoor luncheon… but again, slow week, close to home, so I’m not mad at it.
Until next time
