Easing back in, but the grind didn’t get the memo
I got back in the truck today still feeling maybe 60% human, but business doesn’t wait for perfect conditions. It was one of those days where the body is tired, the mind is foggy, but the calendar said, “Get up, we’ve got work to do.” Three jobs on deck, and each one brought its own little lesson.
Back in the Saddle
I eased into the day with an easy corporate luncheon drop-off. A couple tables, a few chairs — in and out, no drama. Honestly, it was a relief to start with something simple. When you’re not operating at full speed, you appreciate the quiet jobs more than usual.
But even on an easy drop-off, it felt good to be back in motion. There’s something grounding about loading up, delivering, and knowing you’re keeping things moving despite not being at your best.
The Margin Reality Check
The second stop was a pickup from a residential event I’d dropped off for last Thursday. Basic tables and chairs, nothing complicated… except the part where the profit margin barely cleared 60%.
Lately, I’ve been feeling the squeeze more and more on these smaller jobs. By the time you consider labor, gas, time, and the fact that residential setups often come with their own challenges, these orders just don’t hit the way they used to. Today pushed me even closer to setting a firm minimum. I’m realizing I need my business to work for me — not the other way around.
The Hill That Fought Back
The last stop of the day was supposed to be the highlight… and in a way, it was. Same team, same 80-guest package pickup we dropped off on Friday. Same hill too — and that hill did not care that we were tired.
It took just as long to break down and haul everything out as it did to set it all up: a full three hours. Those concrete blocks felt heavier with every step. And even with an ~80% margin, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the job didn’t pay for what it demanded. Some events require more of your body, your planning, and your patience than the math reflects.
Still, there was one bright spot: the propane tank came back unused. Small win, but a win nonetheless — and I’ll take it.
Until next time
