A big teardown, bigger margins, and a curveball from dad life
Today looked simple on the calendar — just one job — but it ended up being the kind of job that eats the whole morning. I thought I had a good handle on how long it would take, but reality had other plans. Still, the margins came through, and honestly, that made everything feel a whole lot better.
A Bigger-Than-Expected Teardown
I went back to take down the string lights we set up yesterday. With two of us, the setup took two hours, and even that felt slow. So in my head, doing the breakdown solo would land somewhere around the same timeframe.
Nope.
It took three full hours. Three. Whole. Hours.
And that included draining the water-filled bases, which was probably the most time-consuming part. No clients were around — a blessing — and I stayed locked in the whole time. But man, it dragged.
The cherry on top? Spotify decided it wasn’t going to work today. So instead of my usual podcasts, I jumped back into Die With Zero on Audible. Still a great listen, but not what I planned.
Margins That Make the Pain Worth It
Even with the long teardown, the standardized margin hit 83%. Realistically, it’s much higher since I don’t pay myself labor on individual jobs, but from here on out I’m sticking to the standardized numbers that actually matter for long-term planning.
Either way, 83% felt like a win.
A Call With Goodshuffle
In the afternoon, I hopped on a call with Goodshuffle to run through some of our MATRA takeaways. At this point, they might as well put me on payroll. I swear, just tell me where to send my résumé and I’ll hang up my rental gloves for a cushy SaaS gig. 😂
Dad Mode Activated
I had plenty more I wanted to do today — unpack the truck, organize sidewalls for upcoming events, the usual catch-up tasks. But my kid wasn’t feeling well, and that was that. I shut things down early, picked him up from school, and called it a day.
Some days the business wins. Today, family did.
Until next time
