Today was technically just one job — but it hijacked my entire day. I drove nearly two hours each way to pick up the dance floor I set up on Friday, and the whole time I couldn’t wait to get home and see the profitability analysis. Spoiler: it was a reality check.

The One-Job Marathon
This pickup took way longer than I’d like to admit. The venue was almost two hours out, so between driving, loading, and getting back, my whole Sunday disappeared into a single retrieve.

I don’t mind the work itself, but the drive felt endless. By the time I got home, I was ready to see if the numbers at least made the trip feel worth it.

The Margin Surprise
Drum roll… less than 50% margin.

To be clear, since it was a solo job, the actual cash in my pocket was 100% profit. But when running the standardized analysis — the one that accounts for driving costs and hypothetical hired labor — the margin dropped under 50%.

The biggest culprit? Driving. Nearly half the revenue evaporated just from mileage. And the funniest part? I tried to price myself out of this job. I added a little padding thinking they might decline, but I also knew if they accepted, I’d be fine with it. So much for that experiment.

Sunday Work & Kid Chaos
My only real complaint today was having to leave the house on a Sunday. I got the vibe the venue probably would’ve let me pick up on Monday, but I wasn’t trying to stretch this job into another day.

Plus, the kids were acting up at home anyway — so honestly, the quiet drive might’ve been the better deal.
