Networking, Facebook Ads, and a Tent Dilemma—A Week in the Trenches
Some networking wins, some losses, and a whole lot of strategy shifts
The Networking Marathon (And a Reality Check)
Three days. Three events. I was on a roll—until I wasn't. Friday's networking event was a complete bust. Poor organization, misleading promises (brunch was... a fruit tray?), and a host who mostly talked about themselves. Not exactly my scene. I gave it an hour, faked a phone call, and made my escape. Lesson learned: not all networking events are created equal.
A New Tent Arrives
Friday afternoon was more productive. My 20x30 high peak tent from Fred’s arrived at the warehouse. I got started unboxing and organizing but only made it about 25% through before calling it quits. It was a quiet day, and honestly, food sounded like a better plan.
Facebook Ads: Early Signs
Later that evening, with the kids at a playdate, I took a deep dive into my website analytics. Our Facebook ads just went live, and there’s already a noticeable uptick in traffic. No firm conclusions yet, but I’m seeing a lot of interest in our 40-guest package, which is the exact one we're promoting. Good sign.
Another Networking Rabbit Hole
Even with a bad event, I did come away with something useful: a new industry organization to explore—WIPA. And if that's not enough, one of my manufacturers called me to tell me about ILEA and MPI. There are so many of these groups, and I’m realizing I need to commit to just one. At least while I’m still running things solo.
Tent Strategy Dilemma
Saturday was slow (we’re "closed"), but I still sent out quotes and followed up with leads. I also spent time rethinking my approach to tent sizing. I’ve been focused on high peaks for 20-wide jobs and holding off on gable-end frame tents until 30-wide opportunities arise. But after losing two jobs this week specifically due to not offering a 20-wide gable tent, I’m reconsidering. No rush, but it’s something to think about.
More Website Analysis
The rest of Saturday was a mix of family time and more website deep dives. Trying to connect the dots between the ads, visitor behavior, and conversions. More to come on that.
Takeaway
Not every networking event is worth the time. Facebook ads are showing early promise. And I may need to rethink my tent strategy. Always adjusting, always learning.
Onward! 🚀
