Canceled tents, spinning fans, and a cocktail return that hurt

A Light Day That Tried to Be Busy
Today was meant to be light — I scheduled two deliveries and left the rest of the day open for last-minute jobs (if folks were willing to pay our rate). Not much came of it, but the handful of stops kept us moving.

Stop 1: Tent Canceled, Linens Forgotten
We were scheduled to set up our 40-guest package at an Airbnb, but the renters weren’t happy with the backyard layout — plus, there had been heavy rain in the morning, and I think the mud sealed the deal. They canceled the tent last minute.

No refunds, of course.

We still delivered 4 cocktail tables, barstools, and linens — well, almost. I realized we had left the linens in the tent fittings box at the warehouse. Had to double back to grab them. Not ideal, but we made it work.

Stop 2: Lights & Fans (Take Two)
We headed back to yesterday’s client’s home, where we forgot to install the lights during the original setup. We also delivered two of our brand-new 36” drum fans.

Simple, seamless drop — and I’m looking forward to hearing how the fans performed.

Stop 3: Quick Pop-Up Tent Delivery
Next was a 10x20 pop-up tent with tables and chairs. Quick in, quick out. No surprises here.

Stop 4: Cocktail Table Pickup at the Condo
Last job of the day was picking up five cocktail tables (with linens) from a condominium building — a return from Friday’s drop-off.

Here’s how the numbers shook out:

  • Revenue: $568

  • Total Job Cost: $295

  • Profit: $273 (48.09%)

  • ARA Calculator Profit: $233 (41.14%)

  • Difference: -6.95%

  • Margins like this sting. Yes, it was an easy job — but I try to aim well above 60%. I waived the rush fee because the client seemed to be a planner, and I’m hoping it leads to future referrals. Still… seeing margins below 50% is painful, no matter the reason.

Until next time
