Weekend work and water damage

I keep telling myself I don’t work Sundays. And yet — here we are, out doing a pickup, dodging floodwater and tracking mileage. But hey, at least we charged weekend fees. That alone might’ve saved this job from being a margin killer.

The Pickup That Almost Floated Away
Today was the pickup for Saturday’s 15x18 dance floor install. Setup had been smooth, but the weather had other plans overnight. A storm rolled through and knocked out the venue’s power — before the wedding even started. They ran the event on a backup generator and still made it through, but our floor? Soaked. Covered. Filthy. Part of it was stored just outside a garage door under an overhang, and the venue flooded. They even had to rip up part of the floor just to get the door to close all the way.

Luckily, pickup was quick — smoother than setup, honestly. And no visible damage to the floor. But the cleanup? That’ll be a project.

Profit Breakdown

  • Total Job Cost: $509

  • Profit: $1,407 / 73.45%

  • ARA Calculator: $1,263 / 65.98%

  • Difference: -7.47%

Not bad at all for a job that required six hours of driving. Nearly 20% of the revenue came from weekend fees, which definitely helped. Given the distance and the headache, I expected worse. Plus, I got to connect with the venue manager and day-of coordinators — both seemed like solid pros and good contacts to have in rotation. Now, if I can snag a review out of it, that’ll tie this one up nicely.

Until next time
