The miles don’t lie

This weekend was all about doing too much driving for too little money. The work itself? Easy. The logistics? Not so much. It’s the kind of stretch that makes you question your quote strategy — and exactly what you were thinking when you accepted certain jobs back in the slow season.

Friday: Time vs. Value

Friday was light on volume — just two small deliveries — but heavy on drive time. The stops were on opposite sides of town, and I had to be home early. Everything was packed and prepped in advance, which made the actual work quick. I was in and out of each location in about 10 minutes. But the round-trip driving clocked in at two hours. That kind of ratio never looks good on paper. Margins? Don’t even want to look.

Saturday: One Dance Floor, One Long Drive

Just one job on Saturday — a 15x18 dance floor. Easy install, smooth overall, but it was an hour and a half away. I must’ve booked this one during the slow season, thinking “Why not?” Present-me would like to have a word with past-me. I even messed up the tile count (rookie move), but thankfully brought extras. Crisis averted. Still, a three-hour round trip for a single install is tough to justify from a profitability lens.

Until next time
