The sun won, the margins held, and Megatron lives

Today was supposed to be a relatively easy one — just picking up everything we dropped off on Friday. The only puzzle was figuring out when to grab the tents. Too early and everything would be soaked in condensation. Too late and the sun would start throwing punches. Spoiler: the sun always wins.

Small Jobs, Small Margins

First up was a simple table and chair pickup from a residential drop-off. Smooth in, smooth out. It was a ~$400 job with ~68% margins — not terrible, but definitely on the lower side. That’s the tradeoff for simplicity.

Next was another table and chair set from a business grand opening. Also easy, but across town. That distance dragged margins down to the mid 50s on a $500 order. If I’d paid someone else to do it? Margins would’ve been in the 40s — unacceptable for a job this small.

Tent Time and Margin Redemption

Then came the tent pickups. First was the 40-guest package from the front yard wedding. I was nervous after hearing about flash storms over the weekend, but this site dodged all of it. No damage, no drama. Margins were nearly 80%, and even if I’d hired it out completely, they still would’ve landed just under 70%. That’s exactly what I want to see from our packaged offerings.

The last stop was another 40-guest setup — this one with all the extras: linens, cocktail tables, fans, lights, and concrete ballasts. Getting the blocks down the hill Friday was easy. Dragging them back up today? Less so. But the weather held, the ground was dry, and we knocked it out. Margins came in around mid 90s, and even with hired labor, we’d still be at 87%. That job beat us up, so I’m glad to see that reflected on the backend.

Warehouse Win: Megatron Is Alive

We got back to the warehouse early and I was ready to call it a day… until I spotted the box. The new batteries for my electric dolly had arrived. I couldn’t help myself — had to install them. And boom: Megatron is alive. Fired right up. I wish we had it these last couple days, but hey — better late than never. Feels like getting a secret weapon back.

Until next time
