Hot sun, heavy lifting, and a record-breaking day for tips
Today was one for the record books — not for sales, but for tips. I don’t usually think much about tips. I’d rather charge fairly and pay my team right. But somehow, we walked away with $350 in tips today — to be split between the two of us. That’s a company high.
Morning Miles and Tent Takedown
We started early and drove what felt like all the way to Toronto (shoutout to my guy for that one) to take down the 20x40 tent from Friday. Easy removal, no surprises — except for the damp tent tops thanks to early morning condensation. Margin landed just under 70%, mainly due to the long drive. Not our most efficient job, but still in the green.
That Poolside Pickup + Rookie Mistake
Next stop was the backyard beauty with the pool — and the second of today’s major tips: $100 each. Grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it.
But this is also where I ran into a completely preventable issue. My electric dolly died. First time ever. I hadn’t charged it in a few days, and I think the heat inside the truck made it worse. Nothing stops momentum like dead gear in 90° heat. Still, the takedown was smooth, and we walked away with margins in the low 80s.
Third Stop, Third Tip
Final job of the day was for a repeat client who insisted on sending a $150 Cash App tip — even after I told her not to. With that kind of appreciation, it almost feels petty to mention the one broken chair… but I’ll be contacting the manufacturer anyway. Prices are up, and that chair runs ~$40 now.
Despite a fried dolly and brutal heat, we pushed through. This job included fans, lights, linens, trash cans — plus setup and breakdown. Margins were solidly in the high 80s thanks to all the add-ons.
One More Stop… Almost
I had one more job scheduled, but traffic was already peaking, and the customer hadn’t confirmed. By the time they did, I had already mentally clocked out. We rescheduled for tomorrow — no guilt.
Until next time
