From spreadsheets to solo setups — and a surprise sale

Started the day in classic admin mode. Just one job on the books, and I almost didn’t make it out the door. Requests have started trickling in again — and you know the rule: gotta catch 'em all. But first, I spent the morning reworking how I track job profitability. Yes, I was still doing it all in spreadsheets. I’ve been a spreadsheet ninja for 20+ years, but it might finally be time to hang up the Excel cape.

AI Insights vs. My Gut

After uploading a few recent jobs to ChatGPT, it gave me three takeaways I already knew — just faster, and without the manual spreadsheet slog:

  1. Solo Jobs Are Skewing Profit Margins Upward (But Aren’t Scalable)

  2. Low-Dollar Jobs with Long Drives Kill Margins

  3. Rush Jobs Require Premium Pricing

It’s not that AI told me something new — it just got there without the late-night formulas and coffee stains.

Webinars and Walkthroughs

I sat through a marketing webinar about using AI. Let’s just say... not every AI talk is worth the hype. But I did manage to squeeze in a site visit afterward, and even though I didn’t expect it, the client booked the job on the spot for next weekend. I waived the rush fee to help close the deal.

Rain, Tents, and Timing

Next stop: the warehouse to prep, load, and deliver a pop-up tent with tables and chairs. Just beat the rain — barely. Set up took about an hour solo, but it went smoothly overall.

Bonus Sale and Bonus Cleaning

While I was out, another order came through for tomorrow. So I stayed at the warehouse to prep that job too. It was that awkward in-between time — too late to go home, too early to pick up the kids — so I made use of it with some bonus cleaning and organizing. Might not have been glamorous, but it felt productive.

Until next time
