Back from Greece and straight into the chaos

Back in ATL, baby
Did you miss me? I left you hanging for 11 days while I cruised around Greece — and I must say, a time was had. That said, I didn’t do much work. Right before I left, I tweaked my ad spend and strategy in a last-ditch effort to hit my July sales goal. Too early to know if it helped, but it didn’t lead to more sales. Inquiries? Plenty. Most of them were last-minute panic calls about rain last weekend. Classic. We’ve really got to train customers to plan ahead.

Letting go (just a little)
While I was gone, my guys picked up two jobs. That might not sound like much, but when you’re a one-man show, it takes a lot of coordination — and trust. Something I’m still working on. I also tend to “overpay” my guys when I’m not there. For example, I paid them $375 total for those two jobs. Each of which was probably just an hour of work. Although they were on opposite side of town. So let’s call it five hours of total work to account for driving time. Close to $40/hr. That’s just where I’m at right now.

Job #1 was a pop-up tent. Margins were just under 70%. Not great, not bad. The standardized and actual margin matched since I wasn’t involved. It was a $1200 pop up tent job which was awesome. I thought I was overreaching when I bid, but I didn’t mind losing it because I knew I would not be here for the takedown. So imagine my surprise when it was booked. The client was super happy and it was a pretty nice house so Im hoping we’ll be called back, frequently.

Job #2 was a 40-guest package takedown. Margins were worse here — closer to 60% — mostly because of the drive time. And to make things worse, they took it down wet… and left everything in the truck for over a week at this point. I haven’t opened it yet, but I already know it’s going to be nasty. However, I did get a 5-star review out of this one.

Back in the saddle
I got back in town today, changed into work gear, and headed straight to the warehouse. First priority was unpacking the truck from last week. Then I went out to pick up another 40-guest package. We set this one up before I left — almost 10 days early — and added free lights to say thanks for the flexibility. Easy setup and takedown. Margins were about 70% again, thanks to a long drive each way. That’s Atlanta traffic for you.

Two days left
That’s a wrap for today. I’ve got two more days to do something strange for a little bit of change… and then I’m off on another vacation. (Face palm.)
