A deep work rabbit hole that felt productive... and didn’t
I spent today bouncing between Stranger Things episodes with my kid and staring at my computer screen way longer than I planned. One of those days that felt busy but probably didn’t move the needle much. Still, once I was locked in, I couldn’t pull myself away.
Getting Stuck in the Data
I lost about six or seven hours deep in Google Tags and Triggers, working through tracking setups and trying to make sense of what was actually happening on my site. It wasn’t intentional at first — I just wanted to check one thing — but it quickly turned into a full-on deep dive.
There’s something about analytics that pulls me in. Once I start chasing “why,” it’s hard to stop.
The Accessories Page Rabbit Hole
Most of the focus ended up on my accessories page. It gets a decent amount of traffic, which sounds great on paper, but the revenue just isn’t there to justify the attention it gets. That mismatch kept nagging at me.
I started digging into where the traffic was coming from, what people were actually doing once they landed there, and what I might be missing. Was it the product mix? The layout? The intent behind the visits? Probably a little of everything.
It wasn’t a total waste of time. I definitely picked up new information and walked away with a better understanding of how people move through that page. That kind of insight usually pays off eventually.
That said, it probably wasn’t the best use of my day. This was one of those sessions that feels productive without directly pushing anything forward. Helpful, yes. Strategic? Debatable. But sometimes you’ve got to go down the rabbit hole just to know it’s there.
Until next time
