Thursday felt like peak off-season energy. The house was quiet, the calendar was light, and there wasn’t much demanding my attention. Friday swung the pendulum the other way and had me back in motion, mostly behind the wheel.

A Slow Thursday, and I Think That’s Okay

I spent most of Thursday tinkering my life away with no clear purpose. There just isn’t much going on right now, which I keep telling myself is something to be thankful for. I think.

The kids were in school, my wife was busy in the office, and the house was silent. Another one of those blissful days where I bounced between tasks, followed curiosity, and didn’t have to rush anything. No real structure, just space.

Talking Shop With the Elephants

In the afternoon, I found out one of the reps from Fred’s Tents was in town for an event. She reached out to say hi, and we met up at the warehouse for a quick tour — which took all of five minutes given how small my operation still is.

What was supposed to be quick turned into over an hour of talking shop. She’s someone with deep experience on the rental side, coming from high-performing companies and leading strong teams. One of the Elephants, if you will. Now she’s on the manufacturing side, which feels like a huge advantage for operators like us.

It was time well spent, and I’m genuinely grateful she made the effort to connect.

Networking Mode: On

Once that light flipped on, it stayed on. That evening, I headed to an international bridal show. Attendance wasn’t amazing, but I made it a point to shake hands and kiss babies.

I met a few new people and got some face time with others I’d already connected with before. I’m starting to understand more and more how important that face time really is. It doesn’t come naturally to me, so I know I’ll need to keep putting myself in rooms like that.

Friday on the Road

Friday, I was back in the saddle and it felt like I covered the entire Atlanta metro. I spent most of the day behind the wheel, which I already know isn’t great for margins.

First stop was a table and chair drop-off — two rounds and ten resin chairs. I was convinced the client wouldn’t book once they saw the invoice, since delivery cost more than double the rentals. But sure enough, the transaction went through. Welp.

Second stop was picking up the dance floor from the movie production set, a solid hour and a half away. I hate long drives, so this one tested me. The takedown was smooth though, and they already had the floor broken down, which was a first. Even unloading piece by piece, margins landed just over 70%, which is great for a last-minute January job.

Last stop was picking up tables and chairs from Monday’s corporate gig. I brought help for setup earlier in the week but went solo on takedown to protect margins. That one landed just under 75% thanks to holiday and labor fees.

I wrapped the day at my home office — aka the dining room — getting quotes out for inquiries that came in while I was on the road. All things considered, a very productive finish.

Until next time
