Trying to do everything before leaving town
Today was a full day — and that’s not an exaggeration. It was my 10-year wedding anniversary, we’re getting ready to go out of town, and I tried to squeeze in as much work as humanly possible. Because of that, the whole day felt like a marathon from start to finish.
A Bad Start Sets the Tone
The day got off on the wrong foot pretty quickly. My helper was 30 minutes late, and on top of that, I messed up my routing dispatch. Nothing disastrous, but enough to throw the entire flow of the day off. Once you’re behind early, it feels like you’re spending the rest of the day trying to recover instead of executing cleanly.
A Setup That Ran Long
The first stop was a 15x50 tent setup for a repeat client. I allotted three hours for it, and honestly, the tents themselves went up fast. The problem came with everything else.
The sidewalls I have are cut almost too short for these tents, which turned into a frustrating puzzle. Add in installing lights and unbolting leg feet so we could join tents together — especially with those angled feet — and the time just kept creeping up. What I planned as a three-hour job ended up taking four.
We got it done, but I wasn’t happy with the outcome. Situations where we’re joining more than two tents together clearly need more thought on my end moving forward.
Repeat Clients and Mixed Feelings
After that, we bolted to a quick table and chair drop-off for a corporate repeat client. Easy and fast. Though I’m pretty sure someone there broke the locking mechanism on one of the tables. Ehh.
Next was another repeat client, also tables and chairs. Nothing eventful, but interesting. Just last year she tried to get me to price match a closer company, which I declined. And Im pretty sure she went with them. This year, she came back. It was a small order and not great for profitability, and I genuinely didn’t think the quote would get approved — but it did.
An Easy Setup and a Late Finish
We set up flooring and a few cocktail tables for a Christmas party next. Mostly easy, though I’m always nervous installing that floor. Thankfully, the lawn was relatively flat.
The last stop stuck with me the most. I didn’t arrive until 6 PM at a business that closes to the public at 4. I communicated ahead of time and there were no complaints, but it still bothered me. I put a lot of value on people’s time, and keeping someone there two hours past closing really hurt me — even if the drop-off itself was easy breezy.
Until next time
