The day the tent poles almost broke me
All Gas, No Brakes
Today was one of those days where the pedal was stuck to the floor. I kicked things off solo at the warehouse, getting some general organization done and preloading the truck. By the time my crew showed up, we were basically ready to roll.
First stop: a fraternity house job with a 20x20 tent. Not just any 20x20 though—this was my first time setting up one from Central Tent. Same general concept as the Fred’s version I’m used to, but man, this frame was heavier. Luckily, it was a 3-man crew kind of day, which meant I felt like I barely lifted a finger compared to the guys.
Déjà Vu Delivery
From there, we rolled down the street to drop off six cocktail tables. Halfway through the drop-off, it hit me—we’d been there before. Normally I can clock repeat clients almost instantly, but this one slipped right past me until we were already unloading.
The Grand Finale Setup
Then came the main event: an hour’s drive (in evening traffic, no less) for a massive job that had pretty much everything we offer. Three tents, tables, chairs, subflooring, dance floor, lights, fans, linens, cocktail tables, bars—the works.
It took the three of us just under four hours on site, and for the most part, everything went smoothly. The only hiccup? I forgot the edging for the dance floor. Neither the client nor I mentioned it, but it’s been bugging me. Coming back out there would’ve crushed my spirit, so I’m taking the lesson and adding “edging” to my pull sheet checklist from now on.
Tent Pole Fatigue
By the time we rolled back into the warehouse, I didn’t want to see another tent pole for the rest of the day. I packed it in, headed home, and spent another hour or two catching up on emails I’d ignored all day. Then, finally, I called it.
Until next time
