Training a rookie while dodging shortages

I kicked off the week with a new face on the team — a friend-of-a-friend situation that might just work out. He’s strong, available when I need him, and willing to jump in. To break him in, I brought him along for today’s route, even though it was mostly a solo-mission type of day. Honestly, I wanted him to see what the job looks like up close.

Chair Delivery Regret
First stop was a quick 12-chair drop-off. Yeah, twelve. I can’t believe this order even got booked. Pretty sure it slipped through while I was on my cruise, because normally I’d have called the customer like, “Are you sure?” Not the most exciting way to start a day, but it did the job of showing my new guy that sometimes we take the random little wins too.

Tent Takedown and Kid Rentals Debut
Next up, we took down the pop-up tent I had set up solo on Friday. Gross margin on that one hit around 80%, which felt great. Even better, it was the first time my kid-sized chairs and tables went out on a rental. Small milestone, but it feels like a step in the right direction.

Monday’s Oddball Order
The final stop was a mix of garden chairs, tables, and fans — all for a Monday event. Odd request for the start of the week, but it was quick, painless, and wrapped things up nicely.

The Great Kid’s Table Hunt
After the route, I switched gears into admin mode: quotes, calls, and the usual behind-the-scenes stuff. Then came the scramble — I landed a job that needed two more kids’ tables, but apparently those things are on backorder everywhere. Tariffs, supply chain, maybe they’re just extinct now… who knows.

After a not-so-fun search, I finally found some on eBay, but at a nasty 70% premium. Thankfully, the job isn’t for a couple of weeks, so I’ve got breathing room. The bright side? This headache opened my eyes to some real SEO opportunities around kids’ rentals. Seems like slim pickings in my market, which screams opportunity.
